 Payson Aurora

A moderate coronal mass ejection from the Sun reached the Earth on the 21st of March yielding a nice display of the aurora from northern parts of the world such as Finland, Canada, and northern Europe. However it was seen here with the camera in Arizona for about an hour on Saturday morning. I let the camera mounted on a tripod and self timer run all night long taking 3 minute exposures consecutively in hopes of capturing a rare moment of increased activity. It worked! At 12:36 am, a deep red glow rose in the north and lasted for about an hour before fading. Although this one would not have been visible to the eye, the camera captured this rare event. Canon Xti, ISO800, 3 mins at f/3.5 with an 8mm fisheye lens from Payson,AZ.

This set of two images shows how fast it happened - The one on the left was taken only 6 minutes earlier and shows only a diffuse red glow. Then the right image shows how it rapidly rose up and became much more intense.
