Payson Aurora November 6, 2023

A recent multiple CME event and a south pointing BZ lead to some minor aurora here in Payson yesterday. The Kp index hit 7 about 6 hours earlier, but with the right BZ polarity we had some nice red glows to the north. Here is the best of a set that ran all night long, peaking around 9pm. This is a 5 minute exposure at ISO 800 with the 8mm f/3.5 fish eye lens. You can see the arch like bar of red at the bottom here, the roof of the house at left and nearby tall juniper pines on the right.

Arizona aurora are quite rare, only a few occur during solar maximum. This one was only photographic - I was not able to see it like this naked eye, but I suspected the sky was brighter.
