Aurora over Payson

Uploaded 4/24/23

The Sun is becoming much more active now, and a solar flare emitted a few days earlier struck the Earth on the night of April 23 - 24. Watching the KP index all day, I saw the index rise to over the minimum of 7.0 required for Arizona to have a chance of getting at least a photographic event. It eventually rose to 8.0 and spawned the northern lights over many parts of the US including California, Az, texas. We set up our robotic Aurora Cam at sunset that night and let it run all night long, exposing 5 mins for hours on end. The sky was clear at dark, but after a few hours totally overcast until morning. Fortunately, the brightest aurora were when it was clear, and as you can see below, we not only had the reds, but hints of blue rays. The camera was our Hutech modified Canon Xti, which made it very red sensitive, and combined with the wide angle of the 8mm fish eye lens, is perfect for aurora scouting.
