Payson Aurora
October 10-11, 2024

Another nght of activity, this one was more extreme than ever! The Kp hit over 8 for half the night from a huge x9 flare, creating a G4 storm. Aurora all over the world was seen as far south as Florida from this event. The Bz was negative the whole time pulling the protons right in. The aurora cam was employed for 5 hours of shooting, the early hours were low altitude red aurora and later a huge SAR arc formed over that which persisted long after the aurora stopped. In this image, you can see both - the lower "flames" of the aurora , and a big red SAR arc over that. SARS are a different phenomenon that often accompany the aurora.
