Sun in Hydrogen Alpha

With Coronado PST

Uploaded 7/3/11

The Sun was quite active again today, producing and Halpha flaring region, and some stunning prominences. It is quite rare to get the chance to shoot such a brilliant area on the sun, with the seeing good enough to allow the new Registax 6 to once again lock onto the granulation for alignment. Here is todays shots:

A filament appears directly above the flaring region. Im putting in this image to show the dim fur of spicules around the edge of the sun, and the relative brightness of the proms. Select an image size for a larger view: 1290 x 960

With the prom data brightened you can now clearly see the complexity of the structures. Select an image size for a larger view: 1290 x 960

With a 5x barlow instead of the usual 2x, more detail can be seen in the proms. Select an image size for a larger view: 1290 x 960

Here you can see in this 5x barlow image the flaring region and the filament. Select an image size for a larger view: 1290 x 960

On the other side of the sun, more delicate proms can be seen, and a rather bland disk. Select an image size for a larger view: 1290 x 960

Just above the last frame, the sun improves a bit, with a nice tree like prom on the edge. Select an image size for a larger view: 1290 x 960
