in the Evening sky
12/17/2016

Currently, there are no bright comets in the evening sky, except perhaps 45P which is far too low in the west to see from our location. Here are four comet shots, taken in a 2 hour interval starting around 8pm last night. They range in brightness from 14 - 16th magnitude, and are primarily a dust component with only short tails if any at all. None the less, there are many other galaxies in their fields, and I went an labeled them with a circle and the galaxies magnitude per Cartes Du Ciel mapping program. The 12.5" goes about 1.5 magnitudes fainter than the 10 with the CCD, reaching well over 20th magnitude in 30 minutes, and 22 in one hour.
2P Encke The CCD window frosted over for part of this shot, a bit fuzzy but still recorded fine.
