Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS
in the evening sky
10/13/24

Now with an 80% moon in the eastern sky, it is still amazing we can see this comet easily naked eye in the western sky, and with about 25 degrees of tail. This shot is a big stack of 5 second exposures totalling 6 minutes of integration with the RASA 8" f/2. The sky was very bright from both twilight and back scatter from the full moon glow. Note the narrow anti tail on the front of the comet, which is now at orbital plane crossing. This is the comet illuminated thin dust in the comets orbit projected onto the head. This field is only 3 degrees wide, and of course only gets the front of the comet.
