Comet Temple 1 - Before the Impact

Periodic Comet in Virgo

Uploaded 6/10/05

This 10.5 magnitude object currently resides near the planet Jupiter in the sky, in the contellation of Virgo. Due to be impacted on July 4th with a washing machine sized copper slug from an approaching spacecraft, the comet currently displays a pale greenish color, and a short 5 arcminute tail. Note that while the individual color frames have been combined with the comet registered to track the moving comet, only the largest images have a hint of color separations on the individual RGB frames. This is because the comet is moving relatively slow, and the subframes of 1 minute each were close enough together with my new 8 second downloads to blur the gap. So the stars appear basically white.
