This composition includes the main showpiece, M16 - the Eagle Nebula in Serpens just to the right of center surrounded by both dark and emission objects of great interest. Note the wing like extensions to M16, much more extensive than the observatory close ups seem to indicate. At the top is the huge red object Sharpless 2-54, a very complex object indeed. At the bottom is the northernmost extension of M17. The faint patches to the lower left of M16 are Sharpless 2-50 and 2-48 from left to right. The large parabolic shaped dark nebula to the lower left is Barnard 313 and above it a very dense Milky Way star cloud.
