The Southern Skies Setting

over the Ocean

Uploaded 8/19/02

During the second week in August, we spent time stargazing and collecting fossils along the beach in Karumba, on the shore of the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Queensland Australia at a lattitude of 18 degrees south. This image is a 5 minute time exposure of the beach, and the Southern Cross, Alpha and Beta Centauri, and Eta Carina setting over the ocean. A dim glow from a distant porch lamp illuminated myself and the beach during the exposure, in which I stood still. I am seen here watching the southern stars setting slowly over the water, the sky dark all the way down to the horizon with countless stars.
