The Pelican Nebula in Cygnus

Uploaded 7/5/02

A treasure trove of unusual and splendid emission nebulosities, Cygnus contains the large and beautiful object know as the Pelican Nebula. Spanning well over a degree, this nebula contains Bok globules, and long trunks of dark dusty nebulosities as pictured above. This area is in the "neck" of the pelican, the north is to the right and the image was purposely composed to contain the most interesting detail along the CCD long dimension. A deep RRGB image ensured a good recording of the contrasts of the dark nebula, and bright shock fronts. While the Pelican can be spotted visually with a richest field scope and an nebular filter, the dark lanes are elusive, and are photographically recorded only. Notice the small red bow shock on the top tip of the long "elephant trunk" dark nebula.
