Sharpless 224 near Capella - SNR
with NEXUS coma corrector
with 10" f/3.9 Astrograph @ f/2.9
Uploaded 3/13/24
This
deep image of a rather peculiar SNR in Auriga near Capella has
been called the "Rice Hat Nebula" for obvious reasons.
It is terribly faint, one of the faintest of all the Sharpless
nebula and requires extremely long integration times to see anything
at all. The OIII reveals most of the bubble shape, with its expanding
tendrils. The reds which are hydrogen show what appears to be
a burst bubble that expanded far more rapidly on one side, thus
creating the "hat". Age has been dated at about 80,000
years. Tech Data: 10" f/2.8 GSO astrograph, Atik 16200 CCD,
