M97/M108 in Ursa Major
Owl Nebula Planetary nebula and inclined spiral Galaxy
Uploaded 4/13/16
This contrasting
pair of bright Messier objects just fits in the two degree tall
field of this two part panorama - the first time Ive tried this
with the 10 inch. The lower round nebula, teal in color is the
Owl Nebula - M97, and the two dark "holes" in the object
are the owls eyes. Upper right is M108, a very nice inclined
spiral galaxy with lots of detail in the larger images.
Surprising was
the sheer number of faint galaxies in this field! In 45 minutes
integration time for the L channel, I find obvious tiny distant
galaxies peppering this image down to around mag 18 and fainter.
Three images are presented here of the same shot. The top is
a conventional image showing the sky normally. The second image
is a negative which when viewed on a computer screen more easily
shows the hordes of faint galaxies. The third image Ive circled
in red each galaxy so you can see just how many there are! The
final fourth shot is a close up on one of the background galaxies
which shows spiral detail.

image of the faint 15.5 magnitude galaxy UGC6211 which appears
in the lower right corner of the original image. Nice spiral
details show in the Sb galaxy - a barred spiral. |
