Sharpless 2-140
Emission / Reflection in Cepheus
Uploaded 12/4/25

The entire constellation of Cepheus is filled with hydrogn glowing dimly. Here in the RASA 11 image is one bright spot, Sharpless 2-140 which surrounds a few hot blue stars. On its southern edge, we see a sharp transition where gas meets thick dust and forms a bow shock.

In the Context image, which was taken simultaneously with the Samyang 135mm lens, we can see the 12 degree wide surrounding field is indeed packed with wreaths of nebulosity everywhere and numerous dark dust clouds. On the right edge is Sharpless 2-137, Lower right of center is a large contorted area called LBN494, Sharpless 2-150 is above center, and finally Sharpless 2-154 is on the lower left corner. It is clear that numerous other beautiful targets for the RASA lie in this amazing field.
