IC2177 - The Seagull Nebula in Monoceros
Emission / Reflection
Uploaded 4/24/26

IC2177 in Monoceros is a composite nebulosity, composed of not only pink and red hydrogen gas in excitation, but wispy blues from reflection, dark dust clouds, and rich star clusters. Several points to note here. First, the "head" of the Seagull nebula is IC2177 and is nearly cut in half with a dense dark lane. Just below another dark notch into the wing of the gull shows blue stars inside with some reflections as well. The two round red nebula on the right are both reflection and emission and are Sh2-295 and Sh2-293. Look carfully to the right of IC2177 and you can see a small red disk. Thats was cataloged as Kahoutek 1-8 as a planetary nebula, but has since been determined to be just a small HII region. The bright orange star at bottom center is LBN1038 and might make a beautiful close up with a longer focal length system.
