Here is a selection of images
taken primarily with newtonians at prime focus. The Galactic nebula
are amongst the most spectacular of celestial objects to photograph,
their brilliant colors and gossamer wreaths of nebulosity make
for superb sky photographs. The correct choice of film however
can make or break a fine image. An excellent film for shooting
these "HII" regions must be particularly sensitive to
the light of the Hydrogen Alpha line, which is a crimson red color.
For Reflection nebula, also considered galactic nebula, a very
contrasty blue sensitive film is required.
Galaxies pose a difficult problem for prime focus astrophotographers in that they are often very dim and small. Long carefully guided exposures are essential with fine grained films such as Tech Pan 2415 which must be fully hypered for optimal results.
