Ultra Thin Moon with the
Orion 10" f/3.9 Newtonian Astrograph

I finally smashed my
previous record for a shot of the youngest moon, the attempt
was made last Saturday morning with a clear blue sky right up
to the edge of the Sun. My youngest moon before this was taken
last year at 19 hours in age. This new image taken with the same
setup is 11h 55m after new moon. New moon occurred for my location
at 11:21pm the night before, and this shot was at 11:16am the
next day. The moon was a scant 8 degrees from the Sun, and just
half a degree over the "Danjon Limit" of 7.5 degrees
where it should be impossible to see the moon. Great care was
taken not to fry the camera, long extended baffle tubes and constant
monitoring of the guide scope to make sure the sun was not in
the field. My ultimate goal is to some day capture the moon at
new.
