Emission Nebula in Perseus

Uploaded 11/7/02

A rather difficult object to get the color right, this nebula is both gas and considerable amounts of dust, imparting less than pure color hues. The center is tinted more orange, while the outlying nebulosity is a deeper red. In addition, a small blue reflection nebula surrounds the bright star at the top of the image. The core region is covered in highly structured dark nebula, rich in veins and knotty clumps. Also known as Sharpless 2-222, this bright object is 8x6 minutes in extent and is off the beaten path to the bright winter nebulae. The stars in this image also have a yellowish cast, primarily from the huge amount of dust obscuration in this vicinity.
